Freedom

After the last but one mass shooting, I asked my students why they think there are so many incidents like this in the US, guns aside. (There are more guns in Canada, though not assault weapons.) One Chinese guy said there might be as many shootings in China but they would never know because the government wouldn't tell them. A Colombian said it's because people here are isolated and ignored by their families - lonely, young men just sitting around on their own, drinking beer and playing video games all night. Another guy agreed. In his country, Mali, your family never leaves you alone. It's unheard of for someone to eat a meal alone. In fact, often people take in absolute strangers for dinner. You can't get away from your family in other countries, and here we pride ourselves on being free of them.
