There goes the Empire

What does it mean that the Anglican church has voted to suspend the US Episcopal Church? This decision is the culmination of years of dispute with the American Church over homosexuality, the role of women in the church, and gay marriage. However, it was the marriage issue that drove the vote, specifically the Episcopalians' decision this summer to change canonical language that defines marriage as being between a man and a woman.

The Archbishop of Canterbury has apologized for the "hurt and pain" this causes LGBT members of the church, but he defended the decision nevertheless. He could do nothing else. The majority of Anglicans worldwide are African.
In fact, the active membership of the combined US, Canadian and British Anglican churches is less than the number the Nigerian church has added in just the past 15 years. There are 20 million Anglicans in Nigeria; 6 million in the US, Canada and Britain combined. The empire really did its job when it came to conversion. Not so much, education.

And what about the fact that the Episcopal Church bankrolls the Anglican Communion in the global south?
