It's the beginning of Spring Break here in American schools and universities. Lots of girls seen lugging huge suitcases down the stairs to the subway on their way to the sun. Students skipping Thursday and Friday classes even if they're not leaving town. When my kids were young, they dreaded the inevitable "What are you doing for spring break?" because they had no answer to their rich classmates' trips to Hawaii or Galapagos.

We aren't immune as teachers, especially if our students are the children of wealthy Chinese businessmen and Wall Street tycoons. So it's with a bit of relief that this year we're able to answer -  New York, to see Hamilton. Either our friends have seen it and say You'll love it! or they haven't and say You're so lucky! My international students haven't heard of it, so I just say Broadway. It's probable that many of R's elite boarding school students have already seen it.

I'm really looking forward to a few days in a hotel, with nothing to do but indulge ourselves: museums, dining out, decent bagels.  Any recommendations?

Damn. Once again I've left it too late to get a reservation at Sarabeth's.
